Praziverm Praziquantel 50 mg
For veterinary use only
Category: Broad anthelmintic (Anti-cestode from isoquinolines).
Form: Oral tablet. Compound: Each tablet contains 50 mg Praziquantel.
Target Animal: Dogs and cats.
Indication: For treatment of infestations caused by adult and immature forms of Dipylidium caninum, Taenia pisiformis, Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia hydatigena, Taenia multiceps, Echinococcus multilocularis, Spirometra mansonoides and Diphyllobothrium erinacei in dogs and Dipylidium caninum, Taenia taeniaeformis in cats. Also, in dog’s lung fluke Paragonimus. Usually a single dose is effective, however preventive actions should be taken to prevent re-infestations (especially in the case of Dipylidium caninum).
Mode of action: The mechanism of action of praziquantel against cestodes is not yet fully understood, but it may be due to its effect on the phospholipids of the parasite coat, resulting in the instability of sodium, potassium, and calcium ions. Praziquantel induces paralytic muscle contractions in the parasite, which then leads to irreversible local pitting and destruction of specific areas of the parasite coat.
Pharmacokinetics: Praziquantel is almost completely absorbed immediately after oral administration. In dogs, its maximum serum concentration occurs between 30-120 minutes. This drug is distributed throughout the body. After passing through the walls of the digestive tract, it crosses the blood-brain barrier and enters the central nervous system. Praziquantel is metabolized in the liver to metabolites of unknown activity and is excreted primarily in the urine. Its elimination half-life in dogs is approximately 3 hours.
